  • When I upgraded to 2x8gb on my DDR3 rig, I decided to mix with the 2x4gb. The 4gb sticks were 2133mhz cas9 and the 8gb were 1600mhz cas9. Fastest & most stable was 2000mhz cas10, I just had to fine-tuned the other numbers. Sticker dates were several YEARS apart lol

  • Ah, this reminds me of the days of slapping whatever RAM you could get your hands on into an old tower. We had 4 different makes with different speeds and capacities. I was so happy to get that last stick in there to reach a whopping 256MB memory. Never had an issue with boot back then. Of course, the old saying was the slowest RAM clocked the rest, so compatibility wasn't an issue. And in case you were wondering: 48, 128, 64, 32 was the sizes. I'd scavenge tossed PCs to find a coveted 128 MB, then 256, then the holy grail of 512 MB before the computer just couldn't accept them anymore. Man, those days were so fun... Now I just buy whatever parts can make a computer to run 8 years, toss the whole build, and design another. No thrill in slow upgrades anymore because there's no point. By the time my computer could do with another set of RAM, software has gotten too bloated to make it worth keeping.

  • What a mad scientist

  • Can you mix the same brand ram? Would really like to hear anyone answer

  • Is it possible to mix ddr 4 and ddr3 ?

  • I...have gotten away with this. I found a really nice PC a bank hand thrown away and was thinking of reselling it. Instead I stripped it for parts and noticed that that RAM was really nice. I can't remember if the timings matched what I had, but it was the same speed and Corsair brand, albeit different model than I already had. So I tried it out, and my PC ran stable with the two new sticks added in with my previous 2. This was back in the DDR2 era.

  • 2x Corsair Dominator 1Gb DDR3 in dual channel 1x Samsung 2Gb DDR3 1x Kingston 4Gb DDR3 And it works pretty okay. P. S. Sorry for no info about frequency and timings, i have not opened this rig for 2 years now, so i dont remember this specs.

  • Eco 8gb 1600mhz ram Samsung 8gb 1600mhz it's ok? Or not

  • I actually didn’t know mixing memory is bad but I didn’t plan to get ram sticks that are different

  • My experience with mixing ram wasn’t awful, I have 4 sticks of 8 gigs all DDR4 and all at the same frequency rate and it’s given me no issues at all running my system with 32 gigs

  • Had gloves on switching ram, clicked in ram with no gloves, evil laughs with gloves on. Movie magic

  • I'm running 1300 I believe 1 stick ripsaw /1600 ripsaw. And another 2 1600 recently pf ripsaw qll ddr3 and it work well.

  • I have 2 stick ddr4 running 2666 (motherboard bottleneck) and 2 stick from online and my pc is now running 23gb at 2666 no problem. my ram is all 3000mhz and 8gb in each but like I said (motherboard)

  • I have done mixed memsticks in the past. But same size only. They work at the slowest speed with no problems.

  • I did 24 gb of ram 2 4gb sticks and 2 8 gb sticks at 3200 mhz no issues.

  • Chrome got replaced by Chia pets for ram eating up yum yum.

  • Been mixing memory since 2012 still no issue with my pc tho

  • I've been running a system with 12 gigs of ram for years... 2x2gb and 2x4gb sticks. DDR3. No issues whatsoever. The ram runs at the lower timings/speed. I didn't need to tweak anything in bios or anything. I just sticked them in and it just works.

  • What if I put an 8gig ram stick next to 2 4gig ram sticks?

  • No silly, if they don't make that type of ram anymore you just swap it out. When you going out with a mate to the pub get to theirs early, and when their messing around getting ready swap out their memory for some second rate crap you bought of eBay!

  • OMG just seeing Madison show up in a video.......... *Thanos voice*.............this DOES put a SMILE on my face. :D

  • Sorry Linus, I always mixed my RAMs on my laptop, I never had a problem :) Don't recomend it though

  • so im in this weird situation, i got one stick of a viper patriot silver 8gb 3200mhz for (X) amount of dollars, then because i live in a shitty third world country, those stick are unaviable , anywhere, and all rams doubled, even tripled it price tags and so on....so i managed to find a sweet deal of the very same stick(same specs) with the difference of this having RGB . Will this creates problems on the fact that one of my sticks uses rgb and the other doesnt?, like, does they still counts as the "same" stick? sorry for the newbie question

  • I have a 8gb ddr4 in my laptop and the specs say I can upgrade it to 20gb using a single sodimm module. But I can't find any 12gb modules on Amazon. Any suggestions?

  • Please don't talk in the third person linus.. it's super cringe.. you had that voice where guys talk to themselves and say things like "ohh Me likey" or "Daddy wants the whole thing baby, Come to Papa!" That sort of terrible third person cringe speak.

  • Bro I run an xp rig with a 1 gig stick and a 512 mb stick, idk how to read the numbers on that old ddr memory, but I know they're different frequencies, but it runs just fine.

  • 0:04 Maddison is a total Maddilass for doing that.

  • I made it to 48GB of DDR4

  • I was always told that mixing and matching RAM would fry your whole system some how. Never questioned it because I was wanting to keep everything consistent anyways.

  • I did this shit on my dad's PC with a 3600Mhz kit of Corsair and a 3600Mhz kit of Gskill, it boots just fine but Windows shows it at 1333Mhz even with XMP lmao

  • my screen green screens and i believe the Ram is 'leaking' aka the am keeps building up. none of the standard fixes have worked, the only thing i haven't tried is trashing it and getting a new computer.

  • Ha! I guess I should have maybe done research before? Or not... I've been running 2 sticks of 4GB DDR4 2400 and eventually had enough of that so I bought 2 sticks of 8 GB DDR4 3600 threw them in, and have had no problems! I have my strange 24GB total memory and have been running smoothly no problems since

  • i had 4 sticks of corsair DDR4 vengance RGB. 2 sticks ran at 3000Mhz and the other 2 were 3200Mhz. thought overclocking the 3000mhz to match the other sticks was just fine. but eventually i started getting random blue screens. after various upgrades with no fix, i realized my RAM were different speeds. took 2 of the same out and everything is fine

  • My ram has 3600MHz speed, yet whenever I look at the default frequency it says 1066MHz. I tried going into the BIOS to fix this and it says I have it set to 3600MHz, yet it still says that the default frequency is 1066MHz. Any fixes? Thanks

  • Wait a second from gloves on to gloves off with installing the memory

  • It's funny how in the beginning it shows madison putting the ram stick on the motherboard wearing gloves and it cuts to a closer angle of a gloveless hand

  • all i wanna know is can i mix 2x8 3200hz w another 2x 3200hz? all i wanted to know need answers

  • If you couldn't mix them, what could would JEDEC be?

  • So I bought a mobo bundle that came with 2x8gb DDR4, but I bought in the Cyber Monday sale 2x16gb and the guys fitted them as requested. However instead of a refund for the 8s I found them in the box. So should I use the 8s in the two spare slots, one on each channel? Or should I put them on eBay?

  • it turns out the the x570 chipset or windows 10 (or both) handles asynchronous dual channel with out the limitation of not exceeding the smallest DIMM capacity. I'm running 8x2/16x2 otherwise identically speced trident Z with XMP on. Both synthetic benchmarks and workloads exceeding 40GB of ram fail to produce any kind of odd behavior or instability. I have not been able to test linux though.

  • I don’t have mismatched hardware

  • The main issue I see with different ram types (especially speeds) is your pc will black screen when under load

  • funny i have benn having 4 diferent manufacturers ram sticks mixing in my pc for 15 years now never had a single issue with it i mixed on pentium 2 on pentium 4 and ddr 2 ddr 4 generations worked without problems on each generation jou can mix as long the mhz is same

  • With my 9-year old system getting errors once every few months, where the solution is to use a single RAM (I have 2) for a few hours, I don't think I will be tinkering with the RAM anytime soon, even if I only have a total of 8 Gb...

  • Not as bad as mixing RAM with Samsung's new 512 GB modules :) www.pcgamer.com/samsung-ddr5-512gb-7200mhz/

  • Linus: virtually no difference when mixing ram Prebuilts: WRITE THAT DOWN! WRITE THAT DOWN!

  • On my girlfriends 2700x I couldn’t even get a 2nd version of the same stick to work and had to buy a single 16gb stick instead.

  • I would love to see a video on async dual channel works, because it doesn't make sense to me lol. For instance, apparently the lg gram can recognize up to 40 gb ram (8 soldered on the board) in this config. I just don't know if you would actually get a boost in this config unless you just run most things single channel on that 32 gb swappable stick... in which case... I just wonder why it would really be worth the effort...

  • Wow linus is back to doing legit worth while videos!

  • Looking for your depends linus?

  • Limus say I kan XOC on mismamched wam!1!1!1!1!1!

  • Right well I built my pc a few years back and bought 2x4 ddr4 3000mhz! Then I decided I wanted more ram so I bought 2x8 ddr4 3200mhz and put the old ones in a box under my bed, I then bought a 1440p monitor and wanted to upgrade my pc a little on the cheap so I looked into the best cpu for my current motherboard which is when I realised that my motherboard can't run faster that 2133mhz ram so I decided to dig out the old ram and shove it all in! I now have 24gb ran running at 2133mhz and haven't had a problem

  • is it bad if i get a stick of ram that was made for my laptop, even though its different from whats in there already?

  • ram compatibilety has wome a long way? i mixed difrent brands of ddr, ddr2 and ddr3 ram never had a problem or had to tweak bios settings. No idee what ur talking about.

  • Yeah i just bought a 4 kit instead

  • 2x 2x8 sticks identical except one has rgb... Weirdest errors lol

  • 0:06 Pretty much what I think about when I hear "computer science". Except you also get to be a mad scientist, just without the nightmare-inducing human experiments.

  • With 4x32GB I couldn't even get the rated 3200hz when I bought two kits of 2x32GB of the same memory. Got in contact with their support, and they couldn't guarantee the stated clock speed unless I bought a 4x32GB kit explicitly. So if you want to use all four lanes at the maximum of your MOBO you need to be much more careful.

  • That is good now I can buy another 4gb 1600mhz ram so I have 8gb ram yay!

  • I had something interesting come up when mixing RAM. I had an Omen 25L that was supposed to have 2x8GB sticks. It had four slots, but only had a single 16GB stick. I found a pair of 8GB sticks from the same manufacturer with the same speed, and installed them. ALL the ram downthrottled from 2933 to 2400. I pulled out the single 16, and the speed went back up. I reinstalled it, then removed one of the 8 GB sticks, and it downthrottled again. I removed the second 8GB stick, back up went the speed. It didn't seem to matter which slots were used, or which stick was put in which slot, the results were the same. I finally gave up, returned the 8GB pair, and found a single 16. The speed remained 2933 with the second 16 stick installation.

  • I remember stealing ram sticks from school so i could play the first watchdog with 8gigs of ram and it worked! still have them in my old build :D

  • I put 2x Delta RGB DDR4 4gb 3000 and 2x G.Skill Aegis 8gb 3000 together and i think it runs because it shows in the task manager that i have 24gb of ram and its currently running at 2133 but i dont know if it will work at 3000mhz can someon help?

  • “Dude, what are you doing? We need to finish building the computer” *rubs the sticks of ram together* “...it’s for good luck”

  • The ad at the end pisses me off, I spent 3 years building an arcade and now ur telling me I coulda got a kit from micro center?!

  • Linus why have your intros gotten more and more cringe lately? Holy fuck cut the dramatics. it's not needed.

  • I had bought different ram modules and it works perfectly. I could even overcklock it from 2666 mhz to 3200 mhz and it runs perfectly stable

  • oh so you are referring to mixing Mhz. I thought you were talking about differing brands. sorry I'm a beginner to the pc tech stuffs

    • He's still mix different ram brands

  • Why are his Segway's into sponsors always so smooth...

  • always thought mixing memory was brands, not speeds

  • 24 gigs of ram here...

  • what about buying two equals ram? i have the HyperX Fury Black 8Gbs 3200Mhz and maybe i will buy another one cause 8 gbs in single channel isnt much at this day

  • I've seen dennis's man cave...lolololololol

  • Always been a compatability issue for me.... Usually with OEM machines and limited tweaking options... I usually just go crucial for friends with store bought PC's....they probably made it anyway, and their website has a good app for finding and ordering compatible dimms....they work, are slower, and slightly more expensive; but they work, and normals ppls prefer it work out of the box....

  • I had one HyperX Fury stick clocked at 2400 and one at 2666. Thanks HP. Basically i had two sticks at 2400 cause the 2666 clocked down to 2400

  • So it's safe to say that six months from now I could buy another pair of sticks identical to the pair I already have without any worry.

  • Can you put 2 of the same ram kits together tho? I can only find the AORUS RGB Memory in 2x 8gb kits. (They actually offer kits with 2 demo sticks but these aren't available anywhere) IS IT POSSIBLE TO PUT TWO 2x 8gb KITS TOGETHER?

  • I remember back when I first got an i7 950 (Q4 2009 about), had 1x2GB DDR 1066 to begin with, then over the two years following I would always get another 2GB stick every two or three months until I finally managed to fill all 6 slots (was a budget constrained student at the time), ran fine for till about 2016 when one stick no longer wanted to keep the speed.

  • I mixed 2 capacities a 16GB and 8 GB and they work flawlessly and in Dual channel mode thanks to the board allowing that, and the XMP works flawlessly as well.

  • I have a mixed memory ddr3 laptop. Works just fine

  • The first AND ONLY time I ever mixed memory, my computer stuttered consistently no matter what I was doing. I matched the speed, timings, and latency. Stutter. I used stock XMP profile for all the sticks. Stutter. Even though these sticks were from the same maker with the same DRAM chips on them, they were incompatible. Never again shall I mix memory.

  • When are you going to make LTT braded flesh lights?

  • I tried adding a 8GB stick to an existing 4GB stock and the system would not POST. Used just the 8GB and the system worked just fine. Both were from the same manufacturer AData. And there are only two slots on the Mobo. Update: I interchanged the slots they were in and now I got it running at 12 gigs.

    • @Raffy thank you for responding to my query. 👍

    • depends on the motherboard

  • 6:49 WHERE IS THE LINK FOR THAT LIST LINUSSSSSSSSS???? ):

  • I want to buy that used 2060 graphics card told my daughter I was going to upgrade her 980 gtx card yeah 7 months later still can’t

  • How about mixing RGB with non RGB RAM?

    • Do you know what kind of corsair ram is this on 3:57 ??? Its not the dominator. ?I don't know what it is?

  • Did this back in the dram days as a kid. Mis matched completely different modules. One posted fine and ran at the proper ram total. Switched the sticks and got a strange ram total. The system ran like a beast forva while. That and as a kid thought it was bigger number better.... till a burning smell and smoke came out of the pc. Lesson learned as a kid.

    • @υηινєяѕє _313 i really can't tell either. Post in the main thread and they possibly can reply back faster to what was used.

    • Do you know what kind of corsair ram is this on 3:57 ??? Its not the dominator. ?I don't know what it is?

  • more Madison pls

  • I feel like Linus just directly complimented me for buying B-die.

  • Could you mix the same ram different speed

  • I've been building computers since the days it required schematics and a soldering iron. But since the advent of memory slots, I've been a stickler to only buy motherboards with (at least) four RAM slots and using only half for the initial build - usually splurging slightly in the now in anticipation for what will be more likely available in the future. Where memory is concerned, I always look at the newest modules with the best overall performance I can get for a reasonable price. My current main rig is somewhat ancient (i7-5820K w/ASROCK X99 Extreme4) with a pair of Ripjaws F4-3200C15G-32GVKs, (2x16GB) which had recently come out and were the best I could afford at the time. Bought another pair about two years ago (now at 64GB total) and, in fact, the exact same modules are still available today - more than five years after my initial build. Granted one can't predict the future but, if you splurge a bit in certain places (mobo & RAM in particular), you can reliably expect plenty of upgrade avenues for yourself in the future.

    • Do you know what kind of corsair ram is this on 3:57 ??? Its not the dominator. ?I don't know what it is?

  • Oi, eeuta 3070 patha ta yeta Nepal tira.

  • Scroll down to see simps literally writing research papers on that girl that appeared for 3 seconds

  • Me currently: I'm surprised that people actually think you can download ram 8 yo me not knowing $h1t about computers: I'm gonna download me 128 gigs

  • Jeez, what has become of this channel? cringeworthy thumbnails, loud and obnoxious video overall, not really that informative. 1.5mio views on average with 13mio subs seems weird as well.

  • Heh... Mixing ram... (has a PC with 4 different DIMMs of 3 different brands and 2d different sizes.) A kingston DIMM, patriot DIMM, two corsair DIMM and one... hold on... Elixir branded stick. Works alright, I've beem running it in the "leftover parts" PC which I kept plugged 20/7 at one point for about a year for remote access to old data. It also has a 2,5" 1TB SSDH and 3,5" 80GB, 500GB, 2TB and 4TB HDD's inside. The cludge is real, but it works reliably.

    • @υηινєяѕє _313 looks like vengeance

    • Do you know what kind of corsair ram is this on 3:57 ??? Its not the dominator. ?I don't know what it is?

  • Without mentioning the die of each RAM kit this video is rather pointless... also gaming load is not exactly sensitive to RAM configurations. Probably irrelevant in this case but next time please use proper benchmarks like Geekbench and Linpack. Also should've checked all the timings to see how the motherboard trains.

    • Do you know what kind of corsair ram is this on 3:57 ??? Its not the dominator. ?I don't know what it is?

  • Let's see how smoothly I can double tap past your sponsor.

  • I have used mixed memory tons of times without any issue.. but with that being said, I was taught to always install memory in pairs. I think that's why it always works.

    • Do you know what kind of corsair ram is this on 3:57 ??? Its not the dominator. ?I don't know what it is?

  • My old PC years ago ran tri channel RAM and I ran 3x2gb sticks of Gskill ripjaws. One of the sticks died after a dodgy power outage, so I grabbed a cheapo kingston stick off ebay to replace it, (back when I didn't know much about computers and had little money). I threw it in without checking anything in terms of compatibility and it worked perfectly fine, no difference at all. Magically with no logic and pure pot luck I'd found almost identical specced RAM and it worked just as well as my previous. Looked ugly as sin, but no issues. to this day I'm still proud of my noob self for that achievement.

  • i have a potato pc with ddr4 having 8gb rams each with different CL and freqs,, it works until now hahaha! ALMOST 2yrs
